Slaves Time Off

House Slaves

  • Slaves would have one day off, Sunday and they would make quilts or go to church
  • even after slavery they would continue to make quilts and attend church as a tradition
  • during slaves families meant the most to slaves
  • they would get split apart because the slave Master would sell them whenever he wanted to
  • families would tell passed on stories so slaves would outsmart the slave master
  • Planters along Georgia and Carolina
  • began picking long-staple amounts of cotton
  • thought they were better than field slaves
  • would clean, sew, cook, serve and play with children if they asked
  • first enslaved African Americans brought to Jamestown, Virginia, 1619
  • first worked on tobacco plantation

Cooks

  • wouldn't be disturbed by anyone
  • including the Master's wife

Slaves Education

  • often times slaves wouldn't know how to read or right
  • Master's wouldn't teach slaves
  • sometimes Master's children would teach house slaves how to read or write
  • only house slaves would be taught because the children wouldn't see the slaves that were outside
  • very few slaves were house slaves, mainly field slaves

What Slaves Ate

Escaping

  • Escaping was easier for field slaves because they have are outside
  • caught escaping
  • would get whipped until you bleed, toes cut off so you can't run again or you die
  • thousands escaped though
  • when escaped they would live under train tracks to be safe.

  • would rebel
  • worked slower to protest how long they would work for
  • if a slaveholder got angry
  • slaves would run away, only for a couple of days
  • Slaves would eat three meals a day
  • breakfast, lunch and dinner
  • their master would give them cheap food for all three meals
  • they would eat corn meal or grift
  • on holidays the master would get them expensive food
  • Six days a week working, one day off
  • Slaves would get up at 5:00 a.m. weather you're a field slave or a house slave
  • Any slave not ready before sunrise gets whipper by Daddy Major

Mornings

  • men slaves would eat breakfast, make their lunch for later then put on their work cloths
  • women would make breakfast and get dressed
  • after preparing for the day everyone would get instructions for the day
