The Medicine Bag

Plot Graph

Climax

Martin is very nervous as he bows his head down, ready to accept the medicine bag. He knows he must take the bag and he also knows that his friends will laugh at him.

Summary

Falling Action

Rising Action

Surprisingly, Grandpa does not put the medicine bag over Martin's head. "No, you need not wear it.” He placed the soft leather bag in my right hand and closed my other hand over it. “It would not be right to wear it in this time and place, where no one will understand."

1. Martin sees Grandpa as he walks down the street.

2. Martin brings Grandpa to his home, which he then collapses of fatigue and exhaustion.

3. Grandpa explains that he is likely to pass away soon. Following the tradition, he needs to pass on the medicine bag - a dirty leather pouch - to Martin. However, Martin is afraid that his friends will laugh at him if he wears it in public.

Martin always talks about his Sioux Grandpa, making Grandpa sound like the vigorous First Natives on television. However, Martin is embarrassed when Grandpa comes to visit him because Grandpa isn’t the First Native Martin exaggerates about. He was old, weak, and frail, and was likely to pass away soon. So, following the tradition, Grandpa must pass on the medicine bag to Martin. Certainly, Martin doesn’t want to wear a dirty leather bag around his neck, but he knows he must accept. He does, and continues his life in the tradition of the Sioux, his ancestors.

Symbolism

The Medicine Bag is a representation of a culture. The bag shows how people are often ashamed of their cultures and traditions, like Martin was ashamed of the bag. He wanted to not wear it because he was afraid the public would laugh at him.

Foreshadowing

The way Martin tensed when he saw Grandpa gave the reader a feeling that something bad was going to happen. Also, when Martin realised that he was going to be the owner of the medicine bag, he began to feel very nervous. This reinforced the foreshadow because, once again, he felt that his friends would judge him on the medicine bag.
