Mapping the Life of Andy Warhol

Begins painting again.

Does a spoof cookbook- Wild Raspberries - with designer Susie Frankfurt as a farewell to commercial art.

His work begins to increasingly become art rather than commerce.

Holds exhibition of Flower Paintings in Paris.

Warhol declares publicly that he is giving up painting in favour of film.

He begins to record conversations on his cassette recorder, which becomes his companion and is always at hand.

Warhol's "Studies for a Boy Book" exhibited at the Bodley Gallery, New York.

Exhibited gold-leaf-collaged shoe drawings in his "Golden Slipper Show or Shoes Shoe in America" at the Bodley Gallery.

Graduated from Carnegie Tech with a bachelor of fine arts degree in pictorial design.

Moves to New York City with classmate and rented an apartment on St. Mark's Place at Avenue A.

He begins work as a commercial artist. Tina Fredericks, art editor at Glamour magazine, hired Warhol to illustrate the article "What Is Success?" He continues illustrations for a variety of commercial projects.

Moves to the third Factory on Union Square.

First major Warhol retrospective in Europe, at the Moderna Museet, Stockholm.

On June 3, a periodic Factory visitor and radical women's rights activist Valeria Solanas, entered the studio and shot Warhol. Critically wounded, he remained in a hospital for nearly 2 months.

Death of Marylin Monroe.

Started a series of paintings of death and disasters.

Warhol turns to the photo-silkscreen technique which becomes one of his primary methods of production.

Began Marylin paintings and of Elvis Presley.

First exhibition as artist at the Ferrus Gallery in Los Angeles.

At the age of nine, he develops an interest in photography and took pictures with the family's Kodak Brownie.

Attends free Saturday art classes at the Carnegie Museum, taught by Joseph Fitzpatrick. For the first time, he meets children outside of his ethnic ghetto and sees how well-off people dress and talk.

Admitted to Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh,and enrolled in the Department of Painting and Design.

Works as art editor for the student magazine Cano.

He studied with artists Balcomb Greene, Robert Lepper, Samuel Rosenberg, and Howard Worner.

Warhol was the only member of his family to attend college.

Andrew Warhola is born in Pittsburgh on August 6, to Julia and Andrej Warhola. Their original names were Ondrej Varchola and Julia Justyna. They were immigrants from the village of Mikova.

Stock market crashes and The Great Depression begins.

His first solo exhibition, "Fifteen Drawings Based on the Writing of Truman Capote," is held at the Hugo Gallery, New York (June 16-July 3).

Contributed illustrations to Amy Vanderbilt's Complete Book of Etiquette.

Julia Warhola moves to New York to live with her son, and lives with him until her death.

Makes the acquaintance of art critic Ivan Karp and curator Henry Geldzahler. Dollar Bills and Coke Bottles series.

Warhol learns the silkscreen technique, generally choosing commercial motifs, which he repeats serially (multiples).

The artist's Last Supper paintings are shown at the Palazzo delle Stelline, Milan. Warhol attends the opening of the exhibition.

Warhol dies on the 22nd of February, after complications following his gall-bladder surgery in New York.

Founding of Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.

Begins constant videotaping of Factory Diaries, spontaneous recordings of visitors and life at the studio.

Performance of the play Pork, which is Warhol's take on members of the Factory, especially Brigid Berlin.

Warhol's admiration for stars increases his dissatisfaction with his own appearance. He begins wearing wigs and undergoes cosmetic surgery on his nose.

Formed Andy Warhol Enterprises, Inc.

Signed a portrait he painted of his friend with the name A. Warhol.

He graduates from Holmes Elementary and entered Schenley High School. While at Schenley, Warhol took elective classes in art.

His father Andrej Warhola, died after a long illness.

The Great Depression ends the year before.

Andy suffers from rheumatic chorea affecting the joints. Forced to keep to his bed, he passes time with paint books and cutout dolls. He acquires a child's movie projector, which he uses to project cartoons on the wall. He also develops a fascination for Hollywood stars, and begins collecting comics and autograph cards.

The New York Times publishes his illustration "The Nation's Nightmare," an advertisement for a CBS radio feature.

He receives an Art Directors Club Medal.

The Serendipity Cafe becomes a regular meeting point for New York's bohemians.

Truman Signs Peace Treaty With Japan, Officially Ending WWII.

Took a summer job in the window display department at the Joseph Horne department store in downtown Pittsburgh.

He began to experiment with a blotted-line printing technique that became one of the mainstays of his 1950s commercial work.

Visits New York for the first time, discovering his fascination of Truman Capote's work, dedicating a series of drawings to him.

Founded the space known as theFactory, which was filled with Warhol's art, music, and constant activity.

Begins his Mona Lisa multiples and his Electric Chair pictures.

Buys his first 16mm camera.

Warhol takes on his first assistant, Nathan Gluck.

Friend helps him to paint his pictures at "colouring parties", which can be seen as the start of the serial production of his works.

A major advertising commission from Miller Shoes company makes Warhol one of the highest-paid commercial artists in Manhattan. The award-winning advertisements further established Warhol's reputation as an illustrator.

Rosa Parks refuses to give up her seat on a bus.

Creates film The Chelsea Girls, which becomes the first underground film to be shown in a commercial theater.

Begins his collaboration with the rock group the Velvet Underground and acts as their producer.

Produced the Exploding Plastic Inevitable, multimedia "Happenings" featuring the Velvet Underground.
