The School to Prison Pipeline- is an epidemic containing, zero tolerance policies that connect students in school to the Criminal Justice system.

Causes of the Pipeline

Rates of Students Transferred from School to Prison.

Non Tolerance Policies- Strict Punishment for minor infractions.

Statistics show that:

  • 40% of students expelled from school are black
  • 70% of students arrested in school are black and Latino.
  • Black students are 3.5x as likely to be suspended than whites.

Schools in Low Income Areas are Subjected to high Policing.

Juvenile System- A system used to manage youth who are convicted for criminal offenses.

Teachers do not take the time out to learn their students.

  • School's located in areas of high crime are more likely to experience intense penalties and higher policing in low income schools.

Who Are Most Affected by the Pipeline ?

  • Children with disabilities are disproportionately represented in the School to Prison Pipeline. Reports show that 8.6% of public school children have disabilities that affect their ability to learn.

  • Resulting in 32% of these students representing youth juvenile center.
