The Odyssey Board Game

Rules

  • Object of the Game: To be the first player to reach Ithaca.

  • You are a Greek trireme, sailing the Aegean Sea, trying to return from Troy to Ithaca after the Trojan War.

  • You roll a dice to determine how many spaces you move forward.

  • You follow the instructions on the spaces you land on.

  • You start off with 12 crew mates. If all of them die along the way, you are not able to continue traveling and lose the game.

CHEATING WILL NOT BE TOLERATED BY THE GODS!

Congratulations! You made it back to Ithaca!

But now, you have to face all of the suitors.

Start (Troy)

The Trajan War has finally ended! Your brilliant plan has worked and your troops have burned down the city of Troy. You now start your journey back to Ithaca.

You have good luck sailing the seas. Continue.

You see land. It is Ithaca! You lay down to rest. But while you are sleeping, your crew opens the bag of winds. They unleash the winds and you are blown away from land. Move forward 1 space.

Pirates rob you. Roll the dice

  • 1-4, you lose all of your supplies. Skip 1 turn.
  • 5-6, they kidnap 1 crew member.

You have good luck sailing the seas. Continue.

Symbols

An orange arrow sign indicates a continue space.

A "STOP" sign indicates a delay point where you either skip 1 or 2 turns.

A "DANGER" sign indicates an obstacle where you have a chance to lose crew members.

A green flag indicates a place that will have no affect on you and your crew. Basically just a checkpoint.

A question mark indicates a place that can possibly be either of the 3 things above.

An exclamation point indicates that you are able to move free spaces or you have been cursed or angered a god.

You are attacked by a flock of harpies (bird-women). Roll the dice.

  • 1-4, 1 crew member is snatched away.
  • 5-6, you find their weakness and scare them ay with brass. Continue.

You have good luck sailing the seas. Continue.

You meet a lost sailor. He asks for help. Roll the dice.

  • 1-2, you reject his plead for help. Continue, but Zeus punishes you for your ignorance. He blasts 1 crew member with a lightning bolt.
  • 3-6, you help the sailor return to his kingdom. Skip 1 turn.

You are blown all the way back to Aeolus' Island! He is enraged and sends you away to never return again. Continue.

You stop at Aeolus' Island. He gives you a bag full of wind. He also grants you safe and quick travels. Move 7 spaces forward.

Your ship is becalmed on an island. Skip 1 turn.

You have good luck sailing the seas. Continue.

If you are cursed by Poseidon, move half of the amount rolled on your next turn (if odd number, lesser number).

If you are not cursed by Poseidon, Continue.

You have good luck sailing the seas. Continue.

Your ship is attacked by a Skolopendra (Shrimp-zilla according to Percy Jackson). Roll the dice.

  • 1-5, your ship is heavily damaged. Skip 1 turn.
  • 6, the Skolopendra eats 1 crew member.

You lose your sense of direction and get lost. Skip 1 turn.

You are stranded on an uninhabited island. When you go hunting with some of your men, you encounter a wild boar. Roll the dice.

  • 1-4, you and your team successfully take down the boar. Yum!
  • 5-6, the boar kills one crew member before you kill the boar.

You arrive at Polyphemus' Island. Polyphemus trapped you and your men in his cave.

Roll the dice.

  • 1-2, you forgot to bring wine! Polyphemus eats 4 of your crew mates.
  • 3-4, you barely make it out Polyphemus eats 3 of your crew mates.
  • 5-6, you outsmarted Polyphemus, Nobody! Polyphemus only eats 2 of your crew mates. But Poseidon curses you!

You have good luck sailing the seas. Continue.

You sail past the Island of the Sirens. Roll the dice.

  • 1-4, you remember to make earplugs for your crew. Continue.
  • 4-5, 1 crew member is drawn by their song.
  • 6, 2 crew member s are drawn by their song.

You have good luck sailing the seas. Continue.

You are becalmed on Helios' Cattle Island. Your crew disobeys you and eats the cattle. You are cursed! Continue.

Your ship is attacked by a sea monster. Roll the dice.

  • 1-4, your ship is damaged, but no one is hurt. Skip 1 turn.
  • 5-6, 1 crew member is swept overboard in the struggle.

You have good luck sailing the seas. Continue.

You stop on the Island of the Lotus Eaters. Roll the dice.

  • 1-5, 1 crew member is drawn to the island.
  • 6, you get away. Continue.

You land on Circe's Island. Most of your crew are turned into pigs. You manage to turn them back, but Elpenor falls off the roof of Circe's house and dies. You lose one crew member.

You stop at the Island of the Dead to consult with the dead. Roll the dice.

  • 1-2, you talk to Achilles, the great war hero. He gives you fighting advice. You kill the next monster you meet (white spaces only).
  • 3-4, you talk to Elpenor. Continue.
  • 5-6, you talk to your mother. She gives you news of Ithaca. You are determined. Move double your next rolled amount.

You are entering the Sea of Monsters. You need to fight Charybdis and Scylla. Roll the dice.

  • 1-2, Charybdis damages your ship. Skip 1 turn.
  • 2-4, Charybdis swallows 2 of your crew mates.
  • 5-6, Scylla picks up and eats 4 of your crew mates.
