Louisa Gradgrind

Her Journey

Louisa Overview

Louisa's Transformation

Louis is one of the main characters in Hard Times, in fact it could be argued she is the main protagonist in the novel due to her almost constant appearance from start to end. A character who is shown to be reluctantly obedient of her father's Rationalism beliefs, we quickly see her challenging and longing nature to break through and her fanciful side beneath her hard exterior serves as dramatic irony for the audience throughout with Sissy serving as her character foil. A girl who has very few relationships outside home, she clings to and loves her brother more than anything and seems to have no regard or passion for anyone or anything else.

Louisa is certainly a dynamic character, with her undergoing a dramatic change from someone who appears only concerned with facts, to someone who challenges this way of thinking, to her climax point where she finally breaks through this factual barrier to fancy i.e when she confides in her father.
