Poem is a PDF in Canvas - please download it & put it into Kami

As we work with the poem we will:

1) Listen & read a long.

2) Try to find anything personified that is possibly an abstract concept and underline/highlight it.

3) Try to decide what the personified items represent or mean (symbolism).

4) Put the personified items into a sentence which explains the meaning of the poem as best as you can without sounding cliche'.

Module 7: Lesson #1

Recreate this chart or take a screenshot you can print. We will use it a LOT.

Tavis Brunson was a Charlotte native who sadly passed away from heart failure in 2016. He was an amazing performer (I personally got to see him perform at UNCC when I was an undergrad). For more information, visit: http://www.poetrypreservation.org/poems/tavis-p-brunson

Subject Subject Subject

Subject: the topic on which the story is to be written.

Our subject is: A lazy grasshopper and a hardworking ant.

What is the subject?

  • Lazy
  • Hard-worker
  • Persistence
  • Determined
  • Prepared

Theme of the Ant & The Grasshopper

The subject is what is the story about.

So, in your notes, explain what you believe the story of the Ant & the Grasshopper is about.

  • This story is called a "fable." Fables are known for always teaching a "moral" lesson.
  • Morals are always a theme, but themes are not always a moral.
  • SO, let's decide on a theme using some abstract concepts.

  • Idle
  • Indolent
  • Resolute
  • Relentless
  • Unprepared

If you said something like:

"The story is about a hardworking ant and a very lazy grasshopper and how in the end the grasshopper doesn't have food for the winter because he didn't collect any but the ant did."

You summarized. You did not tell me the subject.

There are numerous ways to find the theme, today we are going to use 2 literary devices to assist us in finding the theme.

Now for the THEME!

Theme

Possible themes:

* Being determined and relentless in the present means greater rewards in the future whereas laziness and having an indolent attitude when it comes to working hard means a life full of disappointments and obstacles.

* Preparation for all obstacles means an easier path than if you set out with no plan.

* The Cliche version: Work Now Play Later!

Theme is how the meaning of a story is defined.

It is when an abstract concept(s) is used throughout a piece to enhance or explain the story's essential message.

How To Put Your Theme Together

Take your personified items & work it into a sentence that tells you the lesson being taught.

Student Samples:

1) The theme of the poem is that in order to find your destiny, you need to let go of fate, embrace the pain and this will assist you in finding peace.

In your notes...

What is the theme for the Tale of the Three Brothers?

**locate any abstract concepts, personified items, or symbols to assist you in finding this answer

2) The theme of the "Peace" poem is to let go of fate, embrace your pain so that in the end, you can find your destiny and be at peace.

3) You can't blame fate for your pain since it doesn't actually exist; instead open your heart to peace and you will find that your destiny was always there.

4) Open yourself to your destiny and accept peace despite the pain and forget about fate.

What are Abstract Concepts?

Abstract Definition: existing in thought or as an idea but not having a physical or concrete existence.

Examples: Freedom, Love, Happiness, Jealousy

Concept: an abstract idea; a general notion; a plan or intention; a conception. Synonym: Idea

The Ant & the Grasshopper

In a field one summer's day a Grasshopper was hopping about, chirping and singing to its heart's content. An Ant passed by, bearing along with great toil an ear of corn he was taking to the nest. "Why not come and chat with me," said the Grasshopper, "instead of toiling and moiling in that way?" "I am helping to lay up food for the winter," said the Ant, "and recommend you to do the same." "Why bother about winter?" said the Grasshopper; we have got plenty of food at present." But the Ant went on its way and continued its toil.

When the winter came the Grasshopper had no food and found itself dying of hunger, while it saw the ants distributing every day corn and grain from the stores they had collected in the summer. Then the Grasshopper knew.

One of the biggest areas of confusion is the difference between theme and subject.

A subject is a broad overstatement of what a text is about.

The theme pushes the lessons learned.
