Yet another Flashback

More Flashbacks

Flashback in "The Giver"

"He felt warmth again, the sunshine again, coming from the sky of this other consciousness that was so new to him. This time, as he lay basking in the wonderful warmth, he felt the passage of time. His real self realized that it was only a minute or two; but his other memory-receiving self-felt hours pass into the sun.

Forshadowing in "The Giver"

"He was filled with energy, and he breathed again, feeling the sharp intave of frigid air. Now too, he could feel cold air swirling around his entire body. He felt it blow against his hands where they lay at his sides, and over his back...."

This flashback is very important because this is Jonas' first pain in a memory.

"The next morning, for the first time, Jonas did not want to take his pill. Something within him, something that had grown there through the memories, told him to throw the pill away."

This is a Flashback because it shows an event Jonas didn't see.

"This morning we celebrated the release of Roberta; she told him. 'It was wonderful... Larissa opened her eyes happily. ' They told his whole life before they released him; she said."

More Flashbacks

This foreshadow is telling Jonas to stop taking pills, so maybe they help him predict the Future or the unknown.

This is a flashback because this is a memory from many generations back, which happened before the story.

"Frightened was the way he had felt a year ago when an unidentified aircraft had overflown the community twice. He had seen it both times. Squinting toward the sky, he had seen the sleek jet, almost a blur out on its high speed, go past, and a second later, he heard the blast of sound that followed.

This is an important flashback because it explains Jonas' fear of aircraft and how they rarely leave the community.

Foreshadowing

"She skipped me, Jonas thought, stunned. Had he heard wrong? No. There was a sudden hush in the crowd, and he knew that the entire community had moved from 18 to 20.."

When she Skips Jonas, it could be that he will have a different role in the community.

"Jonas bowed his head and searched through his mind. What had he done wrong.

"This explains that Jonas may probably done something wrong, so maybe he won't get a role?"

What is Foreshadowing and a Flashback?

Foreshadowing and flashbacks help the story to make the story even more interesting to the reader, as well to inform the reader more about the story. You can also find these literary devices in many books like "The Giver".

Flashback is when the author tells the reader about an event that is important, that happened before the story began.

In this foreshadowing, it explains he might be different than others.

Foreshadowing is when the author gives hints and clues to the reader to suggest what will happen later in the plot.

Flashback

Foreshadowing

Flashback is used to show more details about the story, or to give more understanding to the reader about the book.

Foreshadowing is used to show what would happen next or later into the story. It can also help to clarify the story by saying possible future events, though it does not SAY the future, but it gives you hints about the future.
