Margaret Mitchell begins attending Washington Seminary, a finishing school

Margaret Mitchell starts Smith College in Massachusetts

Margaret Mitchell gets a job with the Atlanta Journal Sunday Magazine

Rebecca Latimer Felton, of Georgia, becomes the first woman to serve in the US Senate

-Although Rebecca Latimer Felton is best known for being the first woman to serve in the U.S. Senate, her term lasted less than 24 hours

-When Senator Thomas E. Watson died in 1922, Governor Thomas Hardwick appointed a replacement until an election could be held

-Thomas Hardwick wanted to be Senator himself

-He knew that the U.S. Senate would not actually be in session before the elections were held

-Hardwick decided to appoint Rebecca Latimer Felton, who was 87 years old at the time

-The day after she was sworn in, Rebecca Latimer Felton gave a speech thanking the Senate for allowing her to be sworn in and then Thomas Hardwick was sworn in

Margaret Mitchell gets married for the second time, this time to John Robert Marsh, on July 4.

-Jordan was shot by a sniper in Fort Wayne, Indiana in 1980. He did not die from the attempted assassination.

-When Vernon Jordan had fully recovered, he retired from the National Urban League and joined a major law firm in Washington, D.C.

-His autobiography was published in 2001

-Born June 10, 1835

-Born in Dekalb County

-Graduated in 1852 from Madison Female College

-Got into politics because her husband served in the U.S. Congress from 1884-1890

-Rebecca Latimer Felton was her husband's campaign manager while her husband ran for Congress

-Rebecca Latimer Felton soon became more than her husband's campaign manager. She edited his speeches, wrote newspaper articles about him and his work, and even helped draft bills that he presented to the U.S. Legislature
