Types of Socialism

Authoritarian Communism

Agrarian Socialism

  • authoritarian socialist system
  • Stalin argued that socialism would work best if used worldwide
  • imperialistic values
  • use force or diplomacy to spread Communism to all nations
  • believes sacrifice is justifed for a pure communist state
  • peasant uprising should lead to Communism
  • a nation should seek to become self-sufficient agriculturally
  • then move to industrialization
  • (only practiced in underdeveloped nations)

Leninism

Anarchism

  • Opposes domination by the family, state, religious leaders and the wealthy
  • completely opposed to any form of repression
  • converting present-day private property into the commons or public goods, while retaining respect for personal property
  • Strongly based on Marxism
  • Lenin argued for the establishment of a "Vanguard Party"
  • Vanguard: elite group of intellectuals that are democratically elected and may rule with (almost) absolute power until term expires

Socialism

a political and economic theory of social organization that advocates that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole.

Social Democracy

Marxism

  • progressive compromise between socialism and capitalism
  • government still owns many of the resources, but market forces determine production and demand
  • workers are also enticed with private incentives to increase efficiency
  • "Welfare State": citizens pay high taxes, in return, government provides services to all people such as healthcare, education, transportation
  • change is accomplished through peaceful elections
  • Practiced in much of Europe, China, Canada, Australia, etc.
  • also called scientific socialism
  • based entirely on Karl Marx’s labor theory of value
  • utopian system; most radical form of state economics
  • relies on the total abolition of self interest and abundance of private land and goods
  • no government; the people control everything
