It is the last day of Hate week, and all of a sudden after so much hatred towards Eurasia it has been announced that Oceania is actually at war with Eastasia, and are allies with Eurasia. Winston and others in the records department spent more than 90 hours rewriting history assuring that no trace of the war and hatred against Eurasia existed. Every ministry worker was then given the day after off. Winston heads to Mr.Charrington's shop after receiving the brief case with the book inside. Winston reads through Goldstein’s The Theory and Practice of Oligarchical Collectivism, given to him by O’Brien. This in this book Goldstein explains that the control of history is a central tool of the Party. He adds that doublethink allows Inner Party members to be the most zealous about pursuing the war mentality, even though they know the falsity of the histories they write. The remaining of this chapter is Winston reading the book, while Julia sleeps peacefully.
Chapter 10 begins with Winston waking up in bed in the room above Mr.Charringtons shop. He hears the prole woman singing songs. Julia also wakes up hungry and proceeds to make food. They have a conversation about the woman and life an Winston says that she's beautiful and how she serves as a beacon of how the proles have stayed human. Winston and Julia say "we are the dead" and suddenly a voice repeats the same phrase. Shocked they panic as a voice repeats every word they say. They discover that a telescreen was hidden behind a painting in the room. Knowing their fate Winston and Julia say their goodbyes and shortly after the thought police dressed in solid black storm the room. Winston and Julia are detained and Mr. Charrington walks up the stairs and takes off his disguise. He was a commander of a thought police unit and had Winston under surveillance for a long time, and Winston for the first time realizes he's staring at a member of the thought police.

2. Julia: Winston's lover. A young, pale, dark haired girl. Julia works also at the Ministry of Truth, as a mechanic in the fiction department. Julia is apart of the Anti-sex league and she has had sex with numerous party members.
3. Goldstein: The "legendary leader" of Brotherhood. He is described as the most dangerous and hated man in Oceania by the party.
