Social Justice and Human Rights

Sexual Orientation

  • A person's sexual identity in relation to the gender to which they are attracted; the fact of being heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual or other.
  • Many people of non-heterosexual orientations experience intolerance or hate for their preferences.
  • About 1 in 5 lesbian and gay people have experienced a homophobic hate crime or incident according to a recent report by Stonewall.

Causes of Sexism

Causes for Intolerance

The main cause for intolerance of sexual preference arises from religious conservatism or just ignorance.

  • One of the main causes of sexism is feminine traits are often seen as inferior for both men and women
  • For example, phrases like "you throw like a girl" are insulting and "man up" is synonymous with telling someone to toughen up
  • This can be attributed to women often being seen as the motherly, nurturing type while men are generally expected to be tough
  • Throughout history, women have often been the ones to stay home and take care of the kids and do household chores while men were often the ones to go out and do more "laborious" tasks, such as farming or industrial work
  • Because of this, people are still frequently held to these standards, regardless of how outdated they now are

Examples

Race

  • Slavery
  • Civil Rights Movement
  • National crises
  • Mizzou protests in Missouri
  • Bernie Sander's platform speech on racial inequality
  • Affirmative action

Causes of Transphobia

  • A human race is defined as a group of people who share certain common traits.

Examples

  • The world has 5 major races: Caucasion, Mongoloid, Australoid, Capoid and Negroid
  • Obama
  • Race is a subjective matter, especially since humans share more than 99.99% of the same genetic material.
  • Mental disabilities can include developmental disorders or learning disorders
  • Transphobia, at its most basic level, is caused by a lack of understanding of what it means to be transgender
  • People tend to fear or dislike things they don't understand, which can lead to never having the opportunity to unlearn these prejudices
  • Because of this, it is important to try and educate people on the subject
  • Physical disabilities include, but is not limited to: lack of physical coordination, visual, hearing and speech impediments as well as reliance on a guide dog, wheelchair, or other remedial appliance or device
  • Ethnicity refers to having the same cultural factors such as nationality and language.

Disability

  • Although race and ethnicity are two separate terms, racial inequality and discrimination usually encompasses both .

Gender Issues

  • An employee suffering from a mental illness might require altered job responsibilities, on a partial or permanent basis
  • A physical or mental impairment including hearing, mobility, and visual impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities
  • A ramp may be built by a

building entrance to make

it accessible to wheelchairs

  • More than 30 million Americans between the ages of 21 and 64 are disabled

Causes

  • 25+ million American lives are restricted by the effects of disabilities

Reasons for Prejudice

Psychological

Causes of Disabilities

  • Gender issues include sexism and transphobia
  • Sexism is defined as prejudice, stereotyping or discrimination on the basis of sex/gender
  • Although more commonly seen against women, anyone can be a victim of sexism
  • Transphobia is an intense dislike or prejudice against transgender people
  • A transgender person is someone who doesn't identify with the gender that was assigned to them at birth
  • Throughout history, there have always been controversial race issues.
  • Examples are racial stereotyping and discrimination.
  • Most of these problems are due to extremists or differing cultures and religions associated within each race.

i.e. Jobs, education, service

  • Many people have had times in their lives where one or more family members have been ill or disabled, and many times those memories are far from happy
  • Illnesses like cancer, heart attack, or diabetes cause the majority of long term disabilities
  • Back pain injuries and arthritis are also significant causes
  • Lifestyle choices and personal behavior that lead to obesity are also becoming major contributing factors
  • People wrongly consider disabled individuals the cause of their economic or other resource-related problems.

  • Some think people with disabilities get preferential treatment for jobs and other services, but in reality, people with disabilities are six times more likely to be unemployed than non-disabled people.
  • Racism is becoming a combination of both biological and sociological factors.
  • Most are not work related
