Kraft Cheese

Cheese is an important ingredient to make baked potato soup. For this project, I have chosen Kraft Cheese to research. As it turns out, not all of Kraft's Cheese is natural.

In 2015, Oscar Mayer announced that they would be closing down its headquarters in Madison, Wisconsin.

“The backdrop for all these changes is that Americans are becoming wary of processed foods,” said Diane Bondareff of Associated Press, “For Oscar Mayer in particular, it doesn’t help that recent studies have linked processed meats to premature death and cancer.”

"The Cancer Project" filed a lawsuit against Oscar Mayer to put cancer labels on their packages.

In 2014, the FDA filed a lawsuit against Kraft's use of the phrase 'natural cheese', saying that it is misleading because it contained artificial food coloring.

In defense, Kraft states that the use of the word natural, is meant to be interpreted as the process is natural, not that the cheese contains any artificial ingredients.

Kraft's processed cheese such as the famous Kraft Singles, have been confirmed to be artificial cheese. The FDA (Food & Drug Administration) said that Kraft is not legally allowed to refer to the Singles as 'cheese'. The FDA stated that products made with at least 51% cheese, is allowed to be identified as cheese. Therefore, the full name of the Singles is 'Kraft Pasteurized Processed Cheese Product. '

The ingredients of the Kraft Singles include:

cheddar cheese, whey, water, protein concentrate, milk, sodium citrate, calcium phosphate, milkfat, gelatin, salt, sodium phosphate, lactic acid (as a preservative), annatto and paprika extract (for color), enzymes, Vitamin A palmitate, cheese culture, and Vitamin D3. Phew.

Turkey Bacon Recall

For Baked Potato Soup, Bacon is an important ingredient needed. It adds a special flavor to it. For this projeect, I chose to research Oscar Mayer meats.

In 2015 Oscar Mayer announced a total recall of over 2 million pounds of Turkey Bacon. Kraft (who owns Oscar Mayer) stated that the product was recalled because they were adulterated, meaning that they would be spoiled before the "best when used by" date.
