Definition of Theme:

Theme is a moral, broad idea, or message embedded in a book. Theme is one of the 5 fundamental components of fiction. The other 4 parts are plot, character, setting, and style. The message expressed may be about life, society, or the human nature.

Theme 1: Pain

Pain is essential for learning to take place. The dictionary definition of pain is “mental or emotional suffering or torment.” An example from the Giver is when Jonas gets memories of pain from the Giver. After experiencing the painful memories, he learned the true meaning of pain.

Theme 2:Diversity

Diversity adds richness to our world. The dictionary definition of diversity is “the state or fact of being diverse; difference; unlikeness”. An example from the Giver is the Giver, because the Giver is allowed to turn off his speakers, he has pale eyes, and he’s the only one with the memories from the past except Jonas and Gabe.

Theme 3: Freedom of Choice

Freedom of choice allows individuals to grow into their own person. In our world, freedom of choice allows adults to vote. If our world had no choice, it might turn into a world of sameness. In The Giver, there is no freedom of choice, which is why Jonas’s community is a community of sameness.

Theme 4: Memories

We learn both negative and positive things from our memories. In our world, when we have memories of pain such as hurting ourselves, we learn what pain feels like. When we have memories of good things such as receiving gifts, we learn the feeling of appreciation. In The Giver, when Jonas gets memories of war from the Giver, he feels true pain for the first time. When he gets memories of family celebrations, he feels real appreciation.

Theme 5: Death

Death is unavoidable. Even Jonas’s community recognized that. They count not control the fact that death looms over everyone in the end. For instance, they couldn’t control that Caleb would fall into the river, or that he would drown. But just like pain, we all learn from death. If we crash a car and someone dies, we learn to be careful. Caleb died by falling into the river, and we can infer that safety precautions were taken.
