According to the prophecy, if Odysseus raids the cattle, he will lose his ship and crew and return home only after many years alone at sea.
Odysseus wants to know his prophecy and he wants to find out what happens during his journey. Circe tells him to travel to the Land of the Dead to talk to the blind spirit Tiresias. He travels there, and to talk with the dead he must offer up an offering. He gives up his offerings, however his dead loved ones want to talk with him but he must shun them. He talks with Tiresias, and Tiresias tells Odysseus outcome.
