Theme

Example 3

The main character, Marcelo, in the fictional book Marcelo in the Real World written by Francisco X. Stork is very observant.

Marcelo's father wanted him to work in a different area of the business.Marcelo didn't want to move places and he enjoyed working with Jasmine, so he decided that he would speak to his father.

The theme in the fictional book, Marcelo in the Real World by Francisco X.Stork, is that sometimes it is hard to stand up for what you believe in but it's necessary to do what's right.

Example 2

"I notice the girl in the picture and feel as if I were responsible for her pain...why can't I forget about what I found and move on?" (Stork157-158)

"I am doing something that Arturo would disapprove of, I know. Deep inside of me I hope to find a way to persuade him that helping Ixtel is something he should do, we should all do." (Stork 205)

Marcelo found a picture of a girl who was hurt and he couldn't get the picture of her out of his head. He felt like it was his responsibility to make sure that this girl got help.

Example 4

Marcelo knows that his dad would not want him looking for information to help Ixtel. He decides to do it anyways. He feels the need to make sure that this girl is provided for.

Tone of the Climax

In the fictional book, Marcelo in the Real World written by Francisco X. Stork, the climax of the book happens when Marcelo takes a picture and information to an opposing lawyer and the tone is showed through determination to help the girl found in the picture.

Example 5

"Just when I thought I was getting good at understanding the feelings behind most facial expressions, a new one presented itself for deciphering." (Stork 216-217)

Example 4

Marcelo was asking his father permission to go on a trip with Jasmine. After asking his father this, his father gave him a weird look that Marcelo could not understand even though he thought that he knew most facial expressions.

Example 2

Example 1

" 'But you were willing to give the man at the fitness club what he asked. You said to him that you would convince Vidromek to pay in return for a little bonus. Why is he different than Jerry Garcia? Why are his clients different than Ixtel? What is the little bonus that makes such a difference?' " (Stork 289)

At the beginning of the book Marcelo overhears his dad and a business associate talking about getting compensation for a client. Marcelo wants to understand why his father would give money to one man but not a little girl. He was determined to make sure that Ixtel was given the same amount as other clients.

Marcelo finds a letter from Jasmine to his father. When he goes into his father's office to talk about giving away the information he wants to confront Arturo about the letter, but he stops. He knew that he must stay focused on the situation at hand.

" 'Jasmine is logical in her thinking. One step leading to another. Analyzing probabilities and discarding them.' " (Stork 182)

Jasmine and Marcelo were trying to decipher some papers that they had found that might be of use to them. Marcelo noted Jasmine's logical thinking patterns as they were looking through the papers.

Example 3

"She is changing the subject, but sometimes people need to do that, to avoid memories that are painful." (Stork 108)

Marcelo and Jasmine were talking about their childhood and Jasmine mentioned that her mom had died four years ago, and then she became very quiet and changed the subject. Marcelo observed that Jasmine was still sensitive about losing her mom when she did not go into further details of her mother.

Example 1

Example 2

"Jasmine is always calm. Even when she is angry...you can tell that the anger does not affect her. The reason I can tell is that her breathing never alters." (Stork 78)

" 'Jasmine could lose her job.' 'And Marcelo could end up going to public school.' " (Stork 212)

Example 5

Marcelo notices that

Jasmine is a calm person. He notices this by taking note of her relaxed breathing patterns which are opposite of what an angry person's would be like.

Marcelo knows that if he gives Jerry Garcia the information he will no longer be able to attend Paterson. He is willing to go to a public school to bring justice to the case.

"I take a deep breath and say, trying my best to look at him, 'I will not ask Jasmine to come on a boat ride with you.' " (Stork 262)

Marcelo knew that Wendell was not a good guy, so he wasn't going to let Jasmine go out with him. He didn't want Jasmine to get hurt.

" 'There were words like 'hate' and 'destroy' used, but there was no anger between Mr. Gustafson and you.' " (Stork 101)

Marcelo listened to a conversation between his father and a work associate. He realized that even though they were saying hurtful words to each other, their tones were relatively pleasant.
