Gypsy concentration camps

The Liberation of the Romani People

In January 27th 1945, they had began to liberate Auschwitz. The Nazi's had left the prisoners behind in the camp so they could retreat faster. The British,Americans,French, and Canadian troops were responsible for liberating the camps. Right before the camps were retreated from by the Nazi's, they tried to hide all of the evidence of their crimes. Some of the prisoners were to weak to eat and could not be saved. Most of the survivors had trouble grasping the fact that they were freed from the camps.

More about the Romani People

Singling Out the Romani People

The Roma are most commomly known as Gypsies. They are 12 percent of today's population. When the first Romani people ''showed up,'' they were assumed to be Egyptians or Turks because of their dark skin.

Heinrich Himmler

Himmler, born on October 7,1900, started off as being appointed as Hitler's bodygaurd. In 1933, he had set up his first concentration camp in Dachau. After awhile with Hitler's encouragement Himmler would come to realize the range of people who ''qualified,'' for the camp.

The meaning of Roma had a big significance in the identification of the Gypsies. Finding the Jews were easy from their religion because they held records for the community, the roma did not. They turned to their physical characteristics to try and single out the Gypsies. Dr. Robert Ritter was the one who had to find and locate over 30,000 Gypsies in Germany. Ritter claimed that 90 percent of all Roma were mixed blood and had criminal characteristics. The Nazi's had began to persecute them and put the head of this power to Heinrich Himmler.

In 1943 Heinrich Himmler ordered all Gypsy's into concentration camps at the same level as Jews.Over 20,000 Roma's or Gypsies were sent straight to Auschwitz. Similar to the Jews, the gypsies were taken in because of their race. The Nazi's believed them to be ''nonpersons'' of ''foriegn blood.''

The Gypsies Compared to the Jews

They were first sent to the Jewish Ghettos in Poland. The Gypsies were persecuted for their race being "alien." The Nuremburg Laws were soon included the Roma people also.

Only 21,00 were registed into the camp, 1,700 were murdered in the camp that day without being registered into the camp. They were considered as asocial prisoners, they were marked with black triangles and a series of camp numbers with the letter Z.
