Japan's historical folk music (traditional Japanese music) has a infrequent rhythm, impossible for someone to beat the time of the music. The music is usually ma-based. The main focus of the music was to create sounds, tunes and melodies to attempt to mimic the behaviors of nature.
There is three main types of traditional music; instrumental, court music and theatrical. They can be spit into multiple sub-types.
The western world influenced some of Modern Japan's music. Japanese pop (J-pop) sounds similar to American songs. Japanese rock (J-rock) is one of the most popular type of music in Japan.
Electronica (J-synth) is slowing becoming more and more popular in Japan. It is often blended with J-pop and J-rock.
