Setting
Overall Analysis
Atticus tells Scout not to get mad when people say bad things about him. She is able to keep from snapping until they go to Finches' Landing for Christmas and Francis calls Atticus a n****r lover for defending Tom Robinson and says that he is a disgrace to the Finch family and she snaps and has had enough so punches him in the nose for calling her dad that even though she doesn't know what it means.
The setting of this chapter was in several different locations, but the main ones were:
1. It started at Scout's school at the beginning of the chapter.
2. Eventually moved on to Scout's home and the train station when Uncle Jack came to Maycomb County for Christmas.
3. Next the chapter progressed to the Finch's Landing.
4. It ended back at Scout's and Jem's house when Scout confessed what happened to Uncle Jack and when she snuck out of her room to eavesdrop on Atticus and Uncle Jack talking, and all of this occurred around Christmas time.
Uncle Jack
At school Scout nearly gets in a fight with Cecil Jacobs over the mean things that he says about Atticus, but she refrains from it because she knows Atticus would be disappointed in her so she merely walks away. Shortly later Uncle Jack comes to town for Christmas as he does every year. On Christmas day Scout, Jem, Atticus and Uncle Jack continue the tradition of them going to Finch's Landing for dinner. Once they arrive Scout is greeted by the one person she dislikes the most, Francis. Eventually, because Jem is growing up and wants to hangout with the adults, Scout and Francis are left to play alone. Francis eventually starts talking about what he has heard from Aunt Alexandra about how she disapproves of Atticus representing a Negro in court. Francis insists on continuing and being completely oblivious to Scout's warnings and in the end he is punched in the nose by Scout. Once this happens Uncle Jack runs out to break it up. Francis makes up a story about how she called him a "Whore Lady" and because Scout didn't want to let Atticus down by telling him the truth about why she hit Francis she has no choice but to go along with it. Later after they at arrive home Scout tells Uncle Jack the truth and he apologizes about jumping on her after she hit Francis. He says that he should talk to Aunt Alexandra about it, but Scout begs him not to for fear that Atticus would not approve.
Cecil Jacobs
Atticus' brother who comes to visit him every Christmas. He is a doctor and has never been married or had kids.

Questions To Consider
1. If you were in Atticus' shoes in the same time period would you face the reticule and the trials of defending Tom Robinson in court?
2. What do you think is the status of the relationship between Atticus and his sister? Do you think it was always like even in their youth?
3. Do you think this conflict will continue to affect them?
4. How do you think Atticus truly takes in the events that occurred in this chapter?
