Civil Wars in the Developing World

Berlin Conference

Newly Independent States

Early Colonialism

During the Berlin conference, European countries split up Africa and decided which country could take each part. This was done in a diplomatic way without any need for violence.

After countries in Africa gained their independence, different culture groups within them began having conflict. This eventually lead to civil wars which lead to the splitting up of many recently independent African colonies.

The breakup of Yugoslavia in 1991 is an example of newly independent states being formed. This was a very violent process where hundreds of thousands of people were killed in battle. In the end, many new countries were erected as a result of the revolution

Colonialism first began in the 15th century with Spain and Portugal expanding their empires. Their goal was to spread their religious influence and to increase their resources. New land masses such as North and South America were discovered during this time.

Later Colonialism

The Cold War was the product of WWII in which the United States and the Soviet Union were in an arms race to build the strongest nuclear weapon. When it all ended and the dust settled, the Soviet Union was broken up into smaller countries.

In the century after colonization spread, many colonies began having revolutions. Many of these colonies were able to overpower their mother countries and win their independence thus making them their own country.

As the Spanish and Portuguese empires were in decline, Great Britain, France, and the Netherlands all launched a second wave of colonization. During this wave of colonialism land was taken from Asia and Africa.
