There are two main types of hackers; black hats and white hats.

A firewall is a system designed to prevent unauthorized access to or from a private network.

'Black hats' are the criminal side of hacking; they exploit system weakness for the gain of money or personal information.

'White hats' are the legal side of hacking; they hack into systems for the purpose of repair.

Security Risks and Protection Mechanisms

Hackers, in relation to websites; can change information, completely take down the website or even steal personal details.

Firewalls are implemented in both hardware and software.

Risks

Viruses are malware programs that can damage and attack the system. Some can replicate and fill up spare space on the computer. Each part of the computer that the virus attack can be classed as 'infected'.

They can steal information, spam the user, corrupt data and slow down the CPU speed.

Protection

Mechanisms

This is a standard protocol used for the secure transmission of documents over a network.

SSL creates a secure link between a web server and browser to ensure private and integral data transmission.

Strong passwords

Identity Theft

The purpose of having a strong password is to reduce the overall risk of being hacked.

Identity Theft includes stealing personal information, such as credit information, name and ID numbers, often used to commit fraud.

you can do this by:

- having a password of the minimum of 8 characters

- password complexity so having numbers, lowercase letters and uppercase letters.
