This is the Montgomery family. They are a Jewish family who lived in a little apartment in Germany before World war 2 started. Sadly the mother died in the holocaust. The father and his children were very lucky to be one of the 4000 jews to be accepted in Canada in 1939. Now they have been living in Canada for almost 10 years.
Elijah Montgomery is a 48 year old Jewish man and is the father of his 4 kids and a husband of his wife. Before the World war 2 started he was a coal miner in Germany for many of his teenage and adult years. In 1939 when him and his family were accepted to Canada, he pursued his dream of being an architecture. Building and creating things was his compassion. Now 10 years later he is able to provide necessary needs for Jasper, Alexander, Rosalyn, and Eleanor. But still hadn't found another soul mate after his wife Claudia died in the concentration camp years ago.
Eleanor Ann Montogomery
is the youngest child in the
family. She is only 3 years old
and she suffered a lot during
the dark days. Other from that
she enjoys many things like
colouring and drawing. She likes
meeting new people and is
always happy even though her mother and her brother died.
Alexander Parker Montgomery is a 15 year old boy who enjoys listening to swing music. He came from a jewish family who ben through a lot throughout the years in ww2. His dream is to become a musician and play jazz around the world.
Roselyn Pierce Montgomery
is a 7 year old Jewish girl. She
lived in Canada for most of the
year but cannot forget her
times in the concentration camp.
One of her passionate hobby is
dancing. Dancing is what distracted
her during ww2. She lost 2 of the most
important people in her family.
Swing music was what kept the Montgomery family entertained during those dark days. Swing is a type of jazz music often played by big bands. This music is played so everyone can dance to it. This music was very popular in the 1930s, almost everybody loved it. Most would go out and dance for the entire night. When Hitler came into power the conflict over jazz intensified. The Montgomerys enjoys dancing, in fact they dance to swing music almost everyday. It was a way to distract themselves from Hitler and the nazis. There was a lot of propaganda around germany about swing music. So when they heard that swing music was prohibited they were devastated espcially Rosalyn. She was really passionate when it comes to dancing. When they were taking by the nazi to go to a concentration camp they allowed swing music to play while they go trough hard labour. This music is what kept the montgomerys from giving up. The 4 kids Jasper, Alexander, Rosalyn, and Eleanor loved swing music but the only problem was that Hitler banned them for jews, not only that but he also banned jews for going to other recreational areas stripping their entertainment from all jews.
When the Montgomery's settled down in Canada they've made new friends including some Japanese canadians. The prime minister Mackenzie King did not take harsh measure towards the japanese canadians. They were taken into internment camps and were removed from coastal areas. One of Elijah first friend was Japanese, his name was Michio. In the camps Michio would write letters to Elijah describing his experience there. He said that they had to live in shacks or make shift houses which were 4 by 8m. He told Eljah to take care of his things while he was gone because they weren't allowed to bring any personal belongings. He also said that families were often broken apart and the father had to go to a different camps than the mother and the children. After reading all the letters Elijah and the rest of the family felt really bad for him and promised Michio that they'll take care of his belongings. After the war the montgomery'sfpund out that Mackenzie King departed all Japanese canadians including their friend Michio.
In 1933 the Montgomery family were put into the famous concentration camp in Poland called Auschwitz-Birkenau which was established by Adolf Hitler. They were stripped from their homes and were tattooed a number on their arms to identify them. Family and friends of the Montgomery were also put in one of the 15 000 concentration camps around Germany. They were separated by the nazi. Elijah Montgomery, Alexander Montgomery, and Jasper Montgomery were taking away from Claudia Montgomery, Rosalyn Montgomery, and Eleanor Montgomery. The nazi tortured the family for years, they shaved their heads, treat them as slaves, gave small amount of food, suffered from lice etc. By the end of 1939 Claudia died from a diseases called scurvy. When the Montgomery found out right after they were released they were devastated. From then on they never forget those years in the camp. They lost so much including Claudia and their closest family friends by either getting shot, gassed, burned, starvation or dies from a disease. As result this effected the Montgomery's emotionally and physically.
The World War 2 began on September 1st 1939. When the Montgomery family wanted to start fresh in Canada they couldn't ignore what was happening back in Germany. They had many family and friends still suffering from anti-semitism. They've heard many rumors about how Hitler was going to invade many countries including Poland, Belgium, France, Denmark, Greece etc. This all started because Hitler hated the Treaty of Versailles and how they took everything away from them. Germans still despise Jews along with other people as well like pacifists, and all the people who were against them were considered their enemies. Since the Montgomery's were one of the 4000 jews accepted in Canada they are very lucky they didnt had to go through all the torture, they were safe. As the years progresses many other countries came into the war and eventually Canada was involved. Canada joined only to show the they are an independent country. This war lasted from September 1st 1939 to September 2nd 1945. In the end Germany was finally defeated and Adolf Hitler commited suicide after realizing he was going to lose the war.
When the stock market crashed during the Great Depression on October 24 1929 the Montgomery family were stuggling. Resulting, the family to lose all their savings and also Elijah losing his job. This meant that they had to cut down on food, clothing, water, and electricity supplies since they couldn't afford to pay for all of those things. That day was known as "Black Thursday", one of the biggest/well known stock market crashes. Childrens suffered the most, thousands died from malnutrition and hunger-related diseases. This happened to one of the neighbor's child next to the Montgomey's. Her name was Nicole Van der woodson, she was one of Jaspers closest friends when they were little and this impacted him emotionally. Eventually Hitler blamed the jews for the broken economy. Throghout the years the economy started gaining its control back and the Montgomery family started living a stable life again. This was one of the events that they stugggled most with during the World war 2.
During their time in Canada they didn't want anything to do with war. They already lost their mother/wife from the holocaust and the last thing they need was another one of their loved ones dying. The Prime Minister of Canada Mackenzie King at first wanted no conscription overseas but in mid 1940s there was enormous pressure from English Canada for total mobilization of manpower. So he had a vote, many voted yes but even more voted no. King created the National Resources Mobilization Act as known as th NRMA to force eligible mens to go to war. Jasper Montomery was one of them men who had to go to war. Hitlers victories and fighting in Normandy proves that they need conscription. Jasper spent years fighting in the war wishing to be with his famliy again but later died from a gun shot to his heart. The Montgomery's were happy that the war was over but they couldn't be happy because they lost many loved ones.
