What is Social Placement?

Theories Connecting to Social Placement.

  • Social placement as defined by the text is the use of education to improve one's social standing.
  • In other words it is placing people in higher or lower social classes based on the education level they have completed.

Question to the class.

  • Conflict Theory
  • Education promotes social inequality through the use of standardized testing and the fact that all schools differ in the way that they teach and present the curriculum to the students making education unequal to different students.
  • Symbolic Interactionism
  • This theory explores the interaction of students in the classroom, on the playground and around the school in general and how that interaction affects the students such as how they may view gender roles. It also looks at how the different expectations and how much the teachers challenge their students may affect the success of the students or how much they may learn.
  • Would you say that social placement in the current society is fair or unfair? Why?

Examples in Society.

  • Education defining the types of jobs that are available to someone with that education level.
  • People with higher education levels will make more in the job field they choose than people with lower eduction levels.
  • While all people have different learning abilities the education system is taught the same to all students and they are expected to be able to show this knowledge on tests and are defined later in life and career choices by these tests.

Video

  • This video is a report on the unfair admissions due to race at Ohio State and Miami University in Ohio. This is connected to social placement because it is an education system that is discriminating based on race even if the students they admit are less qualified that others. It shows that social placement is unfair because even the schools are not giving a far chance to all.
