WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT??

A TALK ON 21ST CENTURY FLUENCIES FOR THE DIGITAL AGE

DIF IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE IN THIS RAPIDLY PROGRESSING SOCIETY, ONLY 2% OF THE INFORMATION WE RECEIVE IS ON PRINTED, PUBLISHED PAPER. THIS MEANS THAT DIF- the ability to locate, evaluate and ethically use that information- IS GOING TO BE CRUCIAL IN THE HOME SCHOOL AND OFFICE. WITH SO MUCH INFORMATION SO AVAILABLE TO US AT ANY TIME, WE NEED TO LEARN HOW TO DECIPHER IT AND USE IT WISELY. WE CANNOT TAKE EVERYTHING AS TRUTH. WE ALSO NEED TO BE ABLE TO USE ANY MEANS OF TECHNOLOGY WE HAVE, QUICKLY, EFFICIENTLY, AND ETHICALLY, IN ORDER TO ASSURE SUCCESS IN THE WORKPLACE AND SCHOOL.

DIF- the ability to find, evaluate and use digital information effectively, efficiently and ethically.

"DIF involves Internet search skills that start with understanding how digital information is different from print information, knowing how to use specialized tools for finding digital information and strengthening the dispositions needed in the digital information environment. As teachers and librarians develop these skills and teach them to students, students will become better equipped to achieve their information needs."
