James McHenry was born

November 16, 1753 and died May 3, 1816,

McHenry was born in Ballymena, Ireland.

He immigrated to Philadelphia in 1771.

After receiving a classical education in

Ireland.McHenry practiced medicine and

studied under Benjamin Rush another

founding father. McHenry was Presbyterian.

When the convention ended Washington called on McHenry to serve as his Secretary of War.During this time he transformed

the army. During the Adams administration McHenry disagreed

with a lot of Adams foreign policy. He resigned from his position in 1800. McHenry spent his later years on his estate in Fayetteville. He died in 1862.

In 1775 James Mchenry joined American Forces as a Surgeon. Mchenry was originally supposed to serve at a hospital in Cambridge, MA but his mentor Dr. Benjamin Rush asked him to serve on the front lines in the 5th Pennslyvania Battalion as a surgeon. McHenry and 2,000 other soldiers were captured by the British in at Fort Washington.

After his release in 1778 McHenry joined the Continental Army again this time as on of General Washington's aide. Despite the fact he renlisted into the army McHenry served for two and a half years as Washington's aide without rank or pay. In 1780 he transfered to Marquis de Lafayette after he began working with Lafayette he was commissioned as a Major. McHenry would form a lifelong friendship with Lafayette and even named his estate Fayettville after him. After the war ended in 1781 McHenry resigned his commission.
