The Robert Taylor Homes: Chicago's Embarrassment

Conditions in the Robert Taylor Homes:

Power and Safety in the Robert Taylor Homes:

The Robert Taylor homes stretched out for 2 miles in Chicago fit to hold only 11,000 people. More than wanted came and cause an overcrowding issue with more than 27,000 people fit in 28 buildings. The streets were littered with trash and blood and children played in the building for their safety. There weren't any groceries or libraries near by leaving even basic food staples almost unattainable. Chicago 's obsession with "cutting costs" relayed to the project straight on. Chicago wasn't able to keep good conditions in the homes due to lack of budget.

Thesis:

The Robert Taylor homes were a public housing project created in 1962 in the Grand Boulevard Community. As years progressed, the 27,000 person limit exceeded regulation; the buildings were controlled by gang members and living conditions were unkempt. After almost 30 years, the buildings were under demolition after a major failure in trying to rid of the Chicago slums.

About the Robert Taylor Homes:

Crime in the Robert Taylor Homes:

October,1976- 22 year old Denise Dosier was thrown off the 15th floor of the homes

In 1962, Chicago setup the largest public housing projects in the nation only to have it be the biggest failure. In the mid-1900s, more than 75% of the Chicago African-American community lived in the southside or the "Black Belt." In 1946, Chicago put the initiative to fix the living community of the "slums" and began construction on the Robert Taylor Homes. 28 buildings, across 2 miles, were tall, gloomy buildings that were able to hold 11,000 people. Since overcrowding was was inevitable, more than 27,000 people were crammed into the unkempt and unlivable conditions leaving the project to do more harm than good.

June, 1983- A grandmother left an infant on the terrace to answer a quick phone call while the baby and 50 other people were abducted without any trail left behind leaving the case unsolvable by police

August, 1991- An 11-year old boy was killed by a sniper fire from a high powered rifle shot by a 13 year-old gang member in the projects.

February, 1993- A maintenance worker is beaten to death by anonymous gang members.
