Biofuels

Learning Outcomes

I know about the advantages and disadvantages of biofuel

I know how to test for suitable fuels

Go through your exam paper and complete the sheet detailing your score for each question.

These are an alternative to fossil fuels.

We can turn plants into alcohol by fermentation.

We can burn the alcohol to produce energy, carbon dioxide and water.

We can then plant more crops to make more fuel. Renewable

This is claimed to be carbon neutral because the plants absorb carbon dioxide when they grow and release it again when they are burned.

Fuels

Advantages and disadvantages

Fuel cells

Create a table with these two columns and use your textbook to populate it.

We have learned a lot about fossil fuels.

  • How they are formed.
  • What they are made of
  • How we separate them
  • What is formed when we burn them
  • How pollution causes global warming and acid rain.

Make a mind map which includes all of this information

Testing Fuels

What makes a good fuel?

We are going to test the different fuels:

Test how much energy they emit

Note how clean the fuel is

Note how easily it lights

Burns easily

Burns cleanly (no ash or smoke)

No Sulphur

Produces lots of energy

Easy to store and transport

Write these in your book and explain why each is important

Testing Energy Output

How could we test fuels for each of these?

We know the energy required to heat up a known mass of water by one degree.

The energy emitted is:

change in temperature

x

specific heat

capactity

of water

x

mass of

water
