The relationship between Shinto & Buddhism

Buddhism

Shinto

  • shinto is an animistic religion that originates in japan
  • being a ethnic religion it has no specific founder.
  • shintoists believe everything has a kami (translated as god or spirit)
  • shintoists also believe certain acts impurify places, such as injury at a shrine or someone dieing and not being thanked for their sacrifice
  • they leave offerings at shrines all over japan
  • though they're thousands of shrines all over japan, some have more significance than others, such as jingu, a shrine dedicated to amaterasu-omikami
  • the main practice of shinto is the purification one's self for the afterlife
  • Buddhism is not monotheistic nor polytheistic
  • Founded by siddhartha guatama, who is commonly known as buddha, meaning " the Awakened one"
  • Buddhism is long journey to enlightenment
  • Enlightenment is also known as nirvaana, meaning no personal belief in Gods
  • Buddhism involves karma, which is the action or work one does during their life time, depending on their karma and actions depends on how they will be reborn and if they will have a good or bad life
  • So basically people who beleive in the religion will stay in concentration until they reach the enlightenment level, and if they do not reach it during their life time, supposedly they will be reincarnated into the next life, and depending on if their were good or bad depends on their next life's experience

relationship

  • Although both religions have their differences they both coexist in Japan peacefully
  • in fact Kyoto, japan's largest city, contains thousands of Buddhist temples
  • unlike most religions, Shinto does not focus on what is right or what is wrong, nothing is absolutely right or wrong, and buddhism focuses on enlightment of one's inner part
  • even though shinto has existed way before buddhism, japan had a hard time accepting buddhism because shinto was the main native religion, and had their different beliefs, but is now accepted because many japanese converted to buddhism and had no choice but to allow it in the country
  • Shinto is a religion that does not really does not spread and is more like a folk culture, buddhism spreded to japan by china and korea
