She was left to take care of three children because her husband died in the war. She was taking her kids back and forth from a bomb shelter area every time a bomb warning went off, but soon decided not to.

He sat out on his porch overlooking the lake. As the bomb hits, his hospital crashed into the lake and killed his patients, but didn’t kill him. Hanging him over the lake, restrained.

Internal conflict - She had to decide if she should take the kids back to the shelter.

External conflict - The bomb coming and blowing up her house.

She was safe through the first bomb warning, but when the bomb dropped she flew across the house. She lived and could only find one of her kids.

He was a doctor that owned a building over a lake with just a couple rooms big enough to fit the patients and their families to take care of them.

Internal - He had to turn people away because he couldn’t evacuate all of them, so he only had two people in his building.

External - His biggest accomplishment, his hospital, is about to kill him.

This was ironic because the advance in technology killed everyone else but she didn’t suffer from technology, she suffered from regular books.

He was trying to move as much as he could out of the towns church so it wouldn’t be harmed, while his wife and baby stayed with a friend. Him and his friend were walking the moment the bomb was dropped.

His friend went into a place filled with soft pillows and Mr. Tanimoto went into a rock garden. He lived, but we don't know what happened to his friend, we suspect he died.

This excerpt from Hiroshima tells the story of four survivors. It shows how the bombs affected them and their lives. John Hersey wrote this novel because he grew up partly in China as well as the United States.
