Power and Justice

Love and Lust

The power of authority is not always one of justice.

Love and Lust have the capability of clouding your better judgement.

Act 3 pg. 1313 is an example of this theme. "I cannot hear you. What do you say? You will confess yourself or you will hang! Do you know who I am? I say you will hang if you do not open with me! " This shows Danforth has let power suppress the importance of justice. With his name filled with such power, he has forgotten the true duty of his position in the court.

One example of this theme can be found in Act 3 p.1311 where Elizabeth pleads, “My husband - is a goodly man, sir. /Danforth: Then he did not turn from you…Look at me! To your own knowledge, has John Proctor ever committed the crime of lechery? /… Elizabeth: No, sir.” This quote exemplifies how loving someone can lead oneself to make costly mistakes. Because of Elizabeth's love for John Proctor, she lies to the judges about him committing adultery and in the ends up damning Proctor and Abigail is left unaccused.

Thank You!

Pride at the expense of others is a hindrance to ones self worth.

One example of this theme can be found in Act 2 pp.1274. "'John, with so many in the jail, more than Cheever's help is needed now, I think. ...Go to Abigail' 'What have i say to Abigail?'" In this quote we can see that Proctor know what he should do to make things right fro his wife but his pride and fear of losing his name are holding him back.

Pride in Morals

Lies and Deceit

Pride in one's good morals shows the amount of value for them self as a human being

Making false accusations and being untruthful creates a cycle of deceit that becomes tough to break.

An example of this theme can be found in Act 4 pp. 1333. "Because I am not worth the dust on the feet them that hang! How may I live without my name?" This exemplifies the value of pride and morals in that John Proctor was willing to give up his life just to so he could keep his name. He knew that if he were to live he would be doing wrong by letting two completely innocent people die in his place.

An example of this theme is in act I pg. 1262 where Abigail exclaims, "... I go back to Jesus; I kiss his hand. I saw Sarah Good with the Devil! I saw Goody Osburn with the Devil! I saw Bridget Bishop with the Devil!". In The Crucible a common conflict is seen between the accused and their society, where they are forced to be untruthful in order to save their own skin. This cycle of deceit is ended with the hangings of those who stood by the truth (that they did not practice witch craft).
