To sum it all up...

  • much like an encyclopedia
  • info HEAVY!
  • use of caption text with pictures

"I believe that there's a cultural misconception about scientists, reinforced by many books, movies and television shows, that a scientist is cold, logical, unable to see the forest for the trees, the opposite of the artist, who is creative and intuitive; that science is Western and dissects things, while Eastern and artistic thought are holistic, spiritual, non-judgmental. But art and science are not mutually exclusive. I believe that understanding how things work, what they're called, and what they do, increases our sense of awe and reverence. I believe we should teach science as a process, tool, not just a collection of facts. It's a tool that allows children to test their own theories and to trust their own conclusions."

Jenkins is also inspired by the questions his children ask about nature and why things work. His book, Looking Down, for example, was inspired by a plane ride with his daughter Page. She asked about the cars and houses and why they were so small.

2008

Steve Jenkins believes there is always something you're unable to capture in the illustrations of non-fiction. For example, when trying to paint or draw an animal, he says, there's always something you will miss. He believes that rather than obsess over the details he could never accurately capture with paint, he can use paper to create a similar aesthetic as the real animal and foster the reader's imagination to visualize the real thing. By using paper, he allows kids the opportunity to fill in the blanks. (http://www.childrenslit.com/childrenslit/mai_jenkins_steve.html)

(Steve Jenkins Books website)

Jenkins is not a trained writer. He actually finds it difficult. So as he writes, he keeps these things in mind:

1- not to patronize or confuse

2- anticipate questions kids might ask

3- give adults a break by having the answers to those possible questions in the back of the books

40 only writes about subjects he's completely fascinated with himself
