OBJECTIVE

PESTS

-The most significant interactions are the ones connected to green arrows in this diagram

-The other colors of arrows don't have any significance except to make it more clear which level the interaction is coming from

-The first green arrow starts from policies because policies ultimately effect the decisions made on the farm

-This arrow points to the strata committee which is responsible for making decisions within Gambier Island Sea Ranch

-Then the next arrow points to the farm committee. They need permission from the strata committee to make any decisions

-The farm committee helps bring ideas forward for the farm including our project which is to utilize the "Thistle Down Field" to grow herbs and green beans

-Therefore the next green arrow points to agriculture

The objective of our diagram is to

illustrate the complexity of the Gambier Island Sea Ranch's food system by indicating some of the relationships within the ranch as well external factors that are influential.

  • deer
  • insects

STRATA COUNCIL

SUMMARY

Gambier Island Sea Ranch

LIVESTOCK

Outside boundaries:

-identified key factors the influence GISR

-GISR has no control over these factors

-example: climate

AGRICULTURE

  • grass for grazing
  • crops

MEDIA

  • sheep
  • pigs
  • chickens
  • turkeys

Middle boundary:

-includes the inputs into the GISR

-Transportation = input since everything is brought to the island on a water vessel

-livestock was not identified as a specific input in this diagram

-too complex to explain livestock since the GISR purchases livestock such as baby pigs to grow on the farm. When the pigs are full grown they send them off the island to be processed but then they are sent back to the Island for the community members

SOIL

HUMAN RESOURCES

Inner boundary:

-includes the direct relationships that impact that farm and the outputs from this level

-example of an output from the farm: livestock
