Vacterl Syndrome

Genetic Changes

Inheritance pattern

Vacterl syndrome is a syndrome that may have different causes in various people. In some people, the syndrome is likely caused by the interaction of multiple genetic and environmental factors. Some possible genetic and environmental factors have been found and are being studied currently.

The characteristic of Vacterl syndrome develop before birth. The defects that happen likely occurs early in development, resulting in birth defects that affect multiple body systems.

Most cases of Vacterl syndrome are sporadic, which means they occur in people with no history of the condition in their family. Some families have multiple people affected with it. A few affected people have family members with one or two conditions, but not enough signs to be diagnosed with the syndrome. Multiple genetic and environmental factors play a part in determining the risk of developing this syndrome and how severe the syndrome will be in an person.

Vacterl Syndrome is a disorder that affects many body systems. Vacterl stands for six different things. The six disorders include vertebral defects (V), anal atresia (A), cardiac defects (C), trachea-esophageal fistula (TE), renal (Kidney) anomalies (R), limb abnormalities (L). People diagnosed with Vacterl syndrome typically have only three of the characteristics.

Percentages of the conditions in People

defects in the vertebrae occur in 60 to 80 percent of people, defects in the Anal region occur in 60 to 90 percent, and Cardiac defects occur in 40 to 80 percent, Tracheo-esophageal defects happen in 50 to 80 percent of people and 50 to 80 percent of people are affected by the Renal or known as Kidneys, and Limb defects are seen in 40 to 50 percent of people that affected by Vacterl Syndrome.

What each letter means

In Vacterl syndrome each letter means a different condition, V stands for Vertebrae, A stands for Anal astria, C is for Cardiac or heart and TE means treacheo- esophageal, R means Renal which also means Kindneys

and L stands for Limb Abnormalities.
