The Simile Of the Sun (Plato)
Being
Thank You
The Good is the source of being, is not being but beyond being in dignity and surpassing power.
The Sun Simile
The absolute form of the GOOD
- The Sun allows generation of plants and all other living things, and creates them, as the Good allows the generation of Forms and creates them.
- The Good is the source of truth and knowledge, and like each of them, but is not identical to either, and is better than both.
- The simile draws a parallel between the sun as the source of illumination of visible objects ,and The Form Of The Good as the source of intellectual illumination of all forms.
- Just as the sun is necessary for vision and life,so is the good that makes reality, truth, and the existence of everything else possible.
- The Eye cannot see visible objects such as a Tree without the Sun ,as the Mind cannot know the kind of Forms without the Form of the Good.
