Communities Come Together Through Many Things, Even Football

Friday Night Lights tells the story of how a football team from Odessa has big dreams to go to the state championship in 1988. Every Friday night the community comes together and watches their favorite past time. This community of Odessa supports one another, even if they are still separated a little by race. They may get angry at each other but they all know that in order to succeed, you must be able to work with everybody.

POEM: “The Glory of the Game”

Friday Night Lights by H.G Bissinger

The first poem I chose to show is a poem by William Hamilton Cline. It very well describes the intensity and excitement of a football game. He uses many sounds and senses to imagine a game as if you were in the stands watching.

POEM: “To an Athlete Dying Young”

This poem, written by A.E. Housman, is an interesting piece. As I searched for more information about who this poem could be about, maybe a son or daughter, I found out that he never married but fell in love with Moses Jackson, his roommate. Although I couldn’t find out who the poem was written for, it has much details and makes the poem very emotional with the words used.

I chose to show this particular part of my annotations because it shows that the people of Odessa really do care about what's going on around them. As you can see, this is one of the earlier times in the book where the community comes together at The Watermelon Feed.
