Conclusion

purpose

The filmmaker's purpose in creating this documentary was to inform people abut how the rich people are controlling the government in a way to benefit themselves, even if it affects the poor.

Park Avenue: Money, Power and the American Dream” is a documentary that compares and contrasts the development of Park Avenue in midtown Manhattan with the appalling lack of development of Park Avenue ten minutes away in the South Bronx. “People who own apartments at 740 Park Avenue make up America’s ruling class” and people who live along Park Avenue in the South Bronx “make up the poorest congressional district in the United States.” 40% of the 700,000 people there live below the poverty level. In the last 30 years the people “have seen their wages fall and the cost of everything else go through the roof. They’ve lost their jobs in a recession caused by bankers across the river. They’ve watched their children struggle in failing schools and they are less well off than they were a generation ago.”

validity/assumptions

Rhetorical appeals

  • The argument provided by the filmmaker has a valid point because it provides proofs and evidence about the gap in the community it is being claim.
  • The underlying assumption provided at the documentary is that politicians do everything for their own benefit and not for the community
  • The filmmaker creates credibility including all of the aspects opinions such as the politician, author, CEO, physiologists, and the corporation of evidence.
  • The documentary was also very emotional and impacting. We felt a little uncertain for the future of the United States. We felt resentment over the actions over the actions and comments of the billionaires and politicians who chose their selfish deals instead of the needs and petitions of the lower class

target audience

The producers also brought up many facts which helped creating logic and credibility to the audience and provide an idea of the statistics that are impacting the nation.

The target audience would be the lower and upper class people in America because of the fact that lowers class is being affected by the actions of the upper class

context

Why care?

The film uses an experiment with a monopoly game. There are two players that have either benefits or hindrances to put a real crisis more in depth and allow the audience of the film to get a better perspective with the fun of a common game. It also uses relevant, intellectual individual to further access the situation.

Lower class should care because they are the ones being affected the most. Such as for example the actions from upper class affects the lower class by not letting them to progress to a better life, and not only to themselves, but also to their children because they will not have the same opportunities as the upper class people

context

The images used at the beginning of the documentary show poverty and struggle of American citizens in Manhattan, New York specifically in the South side of Park ave. However, as the documentary continues shows the luxuries of wealth at the northern side of Park ave. and the images show a complete different type of living compared to the citizens at the southern part. the main idea reflected is that It's hard to succeed when you are born in poverty.

Introduction

In Park Avenue: Money, Power and the American Dream, Gibney contends that America’s richest citizens have “rigged the game in their favor,” and created unprecedented inequality in the United States. Gibney asserts, is this more evident than on Park Avenue in New York. 740 Park in Manhattan is currently home to the highest concentration of billionaires in the country. Across the river, less than five miles away, Park Avenue runs through the South Bronx, home to the poorest congressional district in the United States.
