Lady Macbeth is used to emphasize gender roles

  • Shakespeare uses her to defy against the usual expectations of a woman's roles in other plays and stories of this time period

Macbeth does not seem very manly to his wife.

"Yet I do fear thy nature, it is too full of th' milk of kindness"

  • Women are stereotypically supposed to be sweet, gentle, and loving creatures
  • Shakespeare portrays Lady Macbeth as a power seeking and conniving woman, she seems to be more masculine

"Unsex me here, and fill me from the crown to the toe top-full of the direst cruelty! Make thick my blood; stop up the access and passage to remorse...."

She convinces Macbeth to kill Duncan and that he is less of a man if he cannot, and if he won't kill her then she will to obtain her spot as queen

  • This strays from the concept of women being softer, weaker humans by switching their roles.

Conclusion

  • Lady Macbeth was willing to do anything to be queen
  • Including removing her feminine qualities to avoid feeling remorse after she does what she needs to do to get what she wants
  • Manipulator and power seeker; uses characteristics of a man and a woman
