Eric Carle

Eric Carle was born in Syracuse, New York on June 25, 1929. At age six Carle moved to Stuttgart, Germany with his parents.

He attended the famous art school Akademie der bildenden Künste, and returned to New York in 1952 to begin a career in graphic design

Bill Martin Jr. saw some of Carle's advertisement and he asked him to illustrate Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? This is how Carle's career in children books got started.

After helping Bill Martin illustrate Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? Carle decided to write children books of his own. His first book that the wrote and illustrated was 1,2,3 to the Zoo which was then followed by The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

Eric Carle's most famous book

he wrote was The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Carle creates his books with children in preschool and kindergarten in mind. Carle wanted to create a bridge between the gap between home and school for students going through life transitions. This is what Carle considers to be the second biggest trauma of children after birth.

The biggest trauma for a child is being born. In both of these cases the children leave a place that is warm and that protects them from the unknown. The unknown often brings fear into the child. In Carle's books is he tries to counteract the unknown fear and replace it with a postive message.

Carle's book as been

translated into over 50

different languages.

Some people think that the

appeal of Carle's book is

because he respects the children

who he intends to write the books for. By doing this he makes the books not only fun and educational but interesting and beautiful as well.

Eric used to go on walks

with his father which is where he

found his love for nature. This is why many of his books are about small insects.

In 2002 the eric carle picture book museum was opened in amherst massachussets. It is a 40,000 square foot complex designed for showing the art in all childrens books. Welcoming 416,000 visitors per year and providing 57 different exhibits from over 10,000 pieces of art. Nearly 30,000 children visit the museum each year.

The museum respects picture book art from all sorts of different books not just one's like Eric Carle's. For example the artwork from the beloved series the Spiderwick Chronicles are debuted at the museum currently in their juvenille books exhibit.

Eric Carle has a specific style of artwork that is rarely seen. he paints many different sheets of paper and then cuts out different shapes and pastes them together in order to make a unique look to his art.
