• 1890s - Muslim Turks accused Christian Armenians who protested of Ottoman policies & supported Russian plans = Armenian Genocide
• Genocide: a deliberate attempt to destroy a radical, political or cultural group
• Armenian genocide: 25 years; 1.5 million killed

• Napoleon Egyptian campaign highlighted Ottoman Empire decline & opened a new era of European contact with Muslims regions of the world
• Western Africa to Southern Asia. 1500s, three giant empires. Ottomans inthe middle east, the Safavids in Persia, & Mughals in India

• 3 Muslim empires faced powerful threats from Western Imperialists. European powers however, won treaties giving them favorable trading terms.
• Ottoman Empire extended across North Africa, Southeast Europe, & the Middle East. Economic problems added to the Ottoman Empire
