The Submarine Story

The Crane Story

Dandins also used to work with submarines. One time they launched a submarine that he was one. They were all in different sections of the sub. Dandins asked the head of his section what they were doing, he replied "we're looking for leaks"!

Dandins had to work on a generator in the ocean. To get there, they would get in a big basket that a crane would carry over to its platform. Then they would get out and walk across a high beam to get to/from the generator with no harnesses. One day, Dandins was carrying a thick wire to the generator. The guy in front of him suddenly stopped–he had looked down at the raging sea and was paralyzed with fear. Dandins had to drop the wire, walk to the guy and get him to straddle the beam, the they scooted the rest of the way.

The Canary Story

Dandins used to work at a blast furnace. This furnace let off deadly fumes as it converted metals to iron. Because of these fumes they had to use a Canary Security System.

Before going to work in the furnace you would have to go ask a superintendent. They would judge by the wind if it was safe to go in at all. If it was safe, they would tell you to take a canary with you. The workers had to keep one eye on the bird and one on the job. If the canary dropped, you would have to get out of there as soon as possible, even if someone was down beside you, you'd run. This was because the canaries were more sensitive than humans so they would die before a human.

From these stories, Dandins and I concluded that people aren't very smart. Letting people near deadly fumes with only a canary as a security system; walking across thin high beams over raging waters that would kill you if you fell; sending a submarine underwater when it could have leaks and possibly sink, not humanity's best decisions. From these stories, we know to think about what you're doing and ask yourself if it's a good idea.

The Meaghers

The Meagher name originated from Ireland, however, the only 'Irish' thing I've ever known in my family was me doing Irish dancing.

My grandfather, also known as Dandins, lived in England, Australia and now Canada, so those are the countries I typically associate with my family name.

Both my parents were born in Australia, and my cousins live there so I feel that Australia and Canada are my home countries.

My mum practiced Christianity when she was younger, but I have never praticed religion and more consider myself an atheist.

My family currently has never delved too deep into traditions, and after hearing about past generations I don't think we ever did. We still have traditions, but our lives don't depend on them.

Edward/Dandins Meagher

Because my mum's side of the family lives on the other side of the world, I didn't grow up listening to their stories and such. I hear some stories from my mum, but those are mainly about her life. However, I did some digging and found out that the O'Reilly family name also originated from Ireland. However, as far as I know the O'Reilly's go way back as Aussie's.

My mum followed Christianity and all of the regular traditions, (Christmas, Easter, etc.). But that did not continue with my brother and I.

In all, the O'Reilly name may be Irish but it is held by many generations of hard-core Aussie's;)

As mentioned before, this name originated from Ireland. It comes from the Gaelic O'Meachair meaning the male descendent of the kindly and hospitable chief. This name belonged to people in the County of Tipperary. The land was at the foot of the Devil's Bit Mountain. My dad said that sometime in the past our ancestors had to drop the O' on our name because of moving around and/or the English. Apparently, back in the day of Ireland, people would adapt their last names from their chief's last name, which is why there is so many different ways to spell my last name. And why many people don't know how to pronounce it, (because its only an adaptation).

Dandins was born and raised in Liverpool, England. In fact, he was born during the war and they didn't have enough time to give him a middle name, therefore he is just Edward Meagher, (though my dad claims differently). He grew up playing in bomb houses, which were houses ruined in the bombing. He also spent a lot of time in bomb shelters. He has three other siblings, an older sister, Jean, and two younger brothers, Bill and Colin.

Dandins started as an apprentice electrician at 15. He was indentured to the company for 5 years. During this time he met Nanna, Dorothy/Dot, at the company's sports club. She was working there as a short-hand typist.

At 21, Dandins left the company ans found a job as an electrician. 2 years later he had enough money to marry Nanna. She stayed at the old company as a short-hand typist until they left for Australia.

Nanna and Dandins stayed in Liverpool, he traveled a bit for work and had many interesting jobs including building submarines, elevators, working with a blast furnace and the potato section of Cadbury's.

Around 1967 they were going to move South Africa, but Nanna discovered she was pregnant. They decided to stay in Liverpool and in 1970 they moved to Australia. They had my dad in 1971, and 1972 they moved back to Liverpool.

One day Dandins came home from work and Nanna told him she saw a show on Canada and though it looked really nice so she got them an interview at the Canada house. They went, and in 1974 they arrived in Canada. Dandins has lived here since.

The Family Tree

Edward (Dandins) Meagher

My mum is a veterinarian, she also grew up with animals, therefore they are a big part of my life as well. I've always lived with a cat in the house and I've worked with many animals while helping my mum while she works.

As you could see on the family tree, the men in the Meagher family have a theme in their names. They are always named Edward. I've asked, but there is no specific reason as to why. However, my mum was disturbed by the thought of having her son and husband have the same name. So Nanna told her that if she didn't have a name soon, she would have to follow tradition. They came up with Matthew, and tradition was broken. However, my brother's middle name is Edward, so tradition was only half broken.

Heirloom

Some other interesting Feats:

An heirloom that is significant to our family is a gold ring. It was my great-great-great grandfather's wedding ring and has been passed down through generations. It is a symbol of the Edwards. It is important because it has survived throughout the struggles of generations therefore a symbol of perseverance. I researched the symbols engraved it and they say that is 22 carat gold, made in Birmingham in 1901.

  • My mum prefers me to spell mum as M-U-M as opposed to M-O-M
  • We grew up with this little tale: Shall I tell you a story About the snail Who jumped in the fire And burnt his tail Shall I begin it? That's all that's in it
