Santiago's Journey

The Alchemist

GOAL!

How does this tie in with the symbols and song and quotations?

When Santiago finally reached his treasure, he felt happy. But what is the deeper meaning behind this?

  • The top symbolizes Santiago reaching his treasure, and how high it is, requiring him to believe in himself and be determined to reach his goal. In addition, the stick man laying down is similar to Santiago feeling like the universe is conspiring him and giving up when he got robbed as well as in the lyrics in Maps by Maroon 5.
  • All the experiences Santiago had is what made him happy as well. Experiences are what make life enjoyable, whether it was a great experience or bad. If everything was easy, it wouldn't serve much of a memory as oppose to you cherish than something you have worked hard for and achieved.
  • His true Personal Legend of traveling and learning, encountering people like Fatima, The Englishman, The Alchemist, all giving him knowledge and happiness, which is lasts a life time and is more valuable than materialistic things.
  • All the obstacles he faced serve as lessons and memories for his hard work and dedication toward his Personal Legend.

Summit

All his experience with omens, made him pursue his Personal Legend.

The presentation as a whole

  • The whole presentation shows parallelism to the journey of Santiago, which includes his ups and downs during his quest to his Personal Legend.
  • The mountain symbolizes his journey to the top, which is the treasure
  • The hard terrain path that leads to the top is also similar to the obstacles Santiago faced while traveling.

Song that relates to Santiago's Journey

Maroon 5 - Maps

Notable lyrics: "I miss the taste of a sweeter life" and "When I was at my worst, down on my knees, and you said you had my back, so where were you?"

  • This is similar to what Santiago experienced, when he was robbed by a person he thought he trusted. None of this would have happened if he did not try and pursue his Personal Legend, and just remain in Andalusia, missing the "sweeter life" which is better than being robbed and having nothing left.
  • Shows, again, the idea of the universe "conspiring" him, thinking that life is unfair to those who pursued their dreams/Personal Legend. This was also the reason why people abandoned their Personal Legends, seen by the Crystal Merchant.

Symbolism

Treasure- It symbolizes his entire journey to reaching it. Even though he did reach the treasure, it meant even more to him because of his journey to get it.

The Desert- Symbolizes the immense difficulties that Santiago have while in pursuit of their Personal Legend

Santiago's experiences

Throughout his journey, he experienced different things while reaching his Personal Legend/Treasure.

  • When Santiago was at Tangier, his whole life was turned upside down; a thief robbed him of all his money, leaving him stuck in Tangier. However, he met a man that happily accepted Santiago to work for him in a crystal shop. Eventually making him rich.
  • During his journey to his treasure, he met an Englishman that studies alchemy, learning the secrets such as the Emerald Tablet and creation of Alchemy; Master Work.
  • While in the Al-Fayoum oasis, Santiago meets Fatima, which he falls in love with, and The Alchemist, who gave him lessons and guided him to his treasure.

Santiago

An adventurous shepherd boy in Andalusia who traveled in search for his Personal Legend and dreamed every night about. He went to places like Tangier, Al-Fayoum oasis, and the Pyramids of Egypt.

Theme of Independence/Life Experiences in The Alchemist

Although his parents wanted him to a priest, he refused and became a shepherd, which gave him opportunities to travel around the world

Quotations:

“Before a dream is realized, the Soul of the World tests everything that was learned along the way. It does this not because it is evil, but so that we can, in addition to realizing our dreams, master the lessons we've learned as we've moved toward that dream."

  • Santiago chose to be independent and become a shepherd, he traveled to many places that gave him new knowledge throughout that made him overall happy of his amazing journey.

Personal Legend

  • This suggests that the important part of pursuing one's Personal Legend is not just reaching the final goal, but also the experiences we have learned while reaching it. Santiago learned reading omens and the Language of the World to help him pursue his Personal Legend.
  • Along the way, he dealt with obstacles and received advice or lessons from others such as Melchizedek and The Alchemist which gave him new experiences and wisdom in his pursuit to his Personal Legend to the treasure.

"When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you achieve it."

  • This illustrates all of Santiago's obstacles and adversity he had to face. From being robbed to leaving Fatima while finishing his journey to his Personal Legend, it all gave him experiences he would cherish while achieving his Personal Legend.

"It’s the simple things in life that are the most extraordinary things and only the wise can see them."

  • Some things we deem insignificant, such as the experiences of trouble we faced, actually help us become better.

“Everything you need to know you have learned through your journey.”

  • Symbolizes through experiences; of adversity, love, he has gained new knowledge from it whether it was him being robbed, or meeting Fatima.
