Education

Yoko Ogawa’s most famous book, The Housekeeper and the Professor was made into the movie The Professor’s Beloved Equation. The film was released on January 21, 2006 in Japan and closely followed the book’s plot. The movie focuses on a math teacher known as “Root”, a nickname that was given to him by the Professor when he was a young boy. Throughout the movie, Root recollects the memories he shared with the Professor, an elderly man who could only remember things from the past eighty minutes, and Root’s mother, who was the housekeeper hired to care for the Professor. In both the book and the movie, Root and his mother are exposed to the world of mathematics by the Professor, creating a bond between the three.
