Clay Shirky (born 1964) is an American writer, consultant and teacher on the social and economic effects of Internet technologies.

“When a technology becomes boring, that’s when the social effects become interesting.”

  • Clay Shirky

A few of Shirkys' main concepts regarding to the media landscape and how it is changing:

  • Society has changed and advanced broadly due to the development of the Internet.
  • The expansion of the Internet has enabled society to express their views and their personalities more than ever before.
  • Networks (IE, Facebook) are “natively good” at forming groups: “Group action just got easier.“
  • A “community of practice” is where people gather together in an effort, they learn together, and get better at what they are learning to do. - “every URL is a latent community.”

FILM:

Due to advances in technology and new media fans are able to communicate with their favourite stars from films that they enjoy. Fans are able to communicate through social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook. This is a great way to achieve more public response. The film industry will benefit from this as this will create a 'buzz' around the celebrities which will entice the public to watch the films with the stars in.

When looking at Shirkys theory about changes in the media we can see that society can communicate together as a group rather than one to one conversations much easier than ever before. The Internet provides various ways of interacting with people across the world that has developed into a phenomenon over the past 20 years. Shirky has made relevant points with regards to changes in the media and this can relate to the film industry because producers and directors can interact with the fans creating a link between the producers and consumers.
