How do preconceived notions of the perpetrator affect the outcome or view of the investigation case?

Unconscious Bias:

Evidence

Implicit (unconscious) bias happens when our brains make incredibly quick judgments and assessments of people and situations without us realizing.

Banaji used a series of exercises to alert students to other types of bias, such as our unconscious preference for people similar to ourselves and how our decisions may be influenced not just by logic and reason, but by the prominence — rather than the significance — of information

-a root cause of prejudice, but research says it has robbed us of free will

Dred Scott

-He was a slave in Missouri, but in 1833-1843, he lived in Illinois (a free state) and in an area of the Louisiana Territory, where slavery was forbidden by the Missouri Compromise of 1820.

-Scott returned to Missouri went to the Missouri courts to fight for his freedom, claiming that his residence in free territory made him a free man.

-Scott's master maintained that no pure-blooded Negro of African descent and the descendant of slaves could be a citizen in the sense of Article III of the Constitution.

-Under Articles III and IV, argued Taney, no one but a citizen of the United States could be a citizen of a state, only Congress could grant national citizenship. Taney reached the conclusion that no person descended from an American slave had ever been a citizen for Article III purposes.
