Under the Persimmon Tree

Najmah is a young girl who lost her family to the Taliban. She must make the dangerous journey across Afghanistan to Pakistan, to reunite with her brother and father. Najmah stays with a rich, American teacher named Nusrat. Nusrat is expecting her husband to come home, but then finds out he never will. The two quickly form a connection under the persimmon tree. Najmah finds her brother, Nur, and Nusrat offers to bring them back to America with them, which they both refuse, then go back home to their farm in Afghanistan.

  • Nusrat- a helpful, generous, and loving American teacher who lives in Pakistan, awaiting her husband's return home from war.

The stars symbolize family and connections.

The drought represents the oppressive rule of the Taliban.

The rain symbolizes the end of the Taliban's rule.

Meteor showers symbolize death to the Afghans.

The theme is that we are all humans, and should get along because we're all more similar than we think.

  • Historical Setting- The story takes place in Afghanistan and in Pakistan while the Taliban were in control. There were many starving children, bombing, men taken from their families, Taliban punishing rule breakers, ect.
  • Why it is a historical fiction novel- This novel took place in 2001, when the Taliban started to retreat from power. It contains true facts about this time period such as starving Afghan children, drought, injured veterans, and religious beliefs.
