The process of sharing information by using symbols to send and receive messages.

Ethics - a person's sense of right and wrong
Responsible - being accountable for your actions and doing what you say you will do
To be the most effective person or speaker possible, you must learn to be an ethical and responsible communicator.
5 types of Communication Barriers
- Attitudinal - "I really don't like what we are talking about"
- Social - "This person is not one of my friends"
- Educational - "I'm far too smart to listen to this stuff
- Cultural - "This person's heritage isn't like mine at all"
- Environmental - "There's too much noise to concentrate. It's too hot in this room to even think"

Intrapersonal
Communication with one's self
Interpersonal
Communication between 2 people -- however it can also be more than two people depending on the context
Small Group Communication
A group where every member can actively participate with others
A group too large for all members to participate with one-another
Participating with an audience
Mass Communication
When messages are sent to large, wide spread audiences via electrical and media services

3 types of noise
Physical Noise
Interference created by an outside source
- not being able to someone becuase of loud music, horn, etc
Semantic Noise
Interference created by the misunderstanding of words
Psychological Noise
Interference created by your thoughts
