The Rock Concept Map

More Advance Vocabulary!!!

Foliated metamorphic- hornfels, marble, quartzite, and novaculite.

Nonfoliated metamorphic rock- Gneiss, Phyllite, Schist, and Slate.

Volcano- A mountain or hill, typically conical, having a crater or vent through which lava, rock fragments, hot vapor, and gas are being or have been erupted from the earth's crust.

Lava- Hot molten or semifluid rock erupted from a volcano or fissure, or solid rock resulting from cooling of this.

Fossil- The remains or impression of a prehistoric organism preserved in petrified form or as a mold or cast in rock.

Texture- The feel, appearance, or consistency of a surface or a substance.

Basic Vocabulary

Advance Vocabulary!!!

Clastic sedimentary- Breccia, Sandstone, Siltstone.

Organic sedimentary- Bony fish, corals and certain planktonic algae.

Chemical sedimentary- Halite, Gypsum Selenite, Limestone, and Limestone.

Intrusive igneous rock- granite, gabbro, diorite and dunite.

Extrusive igneous rock- basalt, rhyolite, andesite, and obsidian.

Sedimentary Rock- Rock that has formed through the deposition and solidification of sediment.

Metamorphic Rock- Rock that was once one form of rock but has changed to another under the influence of heat, pressure.

Igneous Rock- Is formed through the cooling and solidification of magma or lava.

Weathering- The action of the weather conditions in altering the color, texture, composition, or form of exposed objects.

Erosion- A type of weathering in which surface soil and rock are worn away through the action of glaciers, water, and wind.

Cementation- The binding together of particles or other cement.

Compaction- The process by which the porosity of a given form of sediment is decreased as a result of its mineral grains being squeezed together by the weight of overlying sedimeny pt bu mechanical means.

More Basic Vocabulary

Melting- Make or become liquefied by heat.

Magma- Hot fluid or semifluid material below or within the earth's crust from which lava and other igneous rock is form by cooling.

Heat- The quality of being hot; high temperature.

Pressure- The continuous physical force exerted on or against an object by something in contact with it.

Cooling- become or cause to become less hot.

Crystallization- is also a chemical solid-liquid separation technique

Magma- Hot fluid or semifluid material below or within the earth's crust from which lava and other igneous rock is form by cooling.

Lava- hot molten rock erupted from a volcano or fissure, or solid rock resulting from cooling of this.

Temperature and pressure- the temperature of 0°C and pressure of 1 atmosphere, usually taken as the conditions when stating properties of gases.
