Alterations to Music

Sharp- raises the note by a half step

Flat- lowers the note by a half step

Natural- cancels the sharp or flat

Accidental- any sharp, flat, or natural symbol added to a note that alters the note from the key signature given. The accidental applies to that same pitch for the duration of the measure. The following measure will return to the key signature unless the accidental is used again.

Key Signatures- remember order of sharps and order of flats. There will never be both sharps or flats together in the key signature.

Scales- remember the patterns of the scales, and how they should sound.

Use a tool such as the Circle of 5ths or Line of 5ths

Ways to remember the rules
