The type was Reverse fault, which is when the material above the fault plane moves up in relation to the material below.

The May 22nd, 1960 Valdivia earthquake was one of the most severe and disastrous earthquakes in the world.

Was located on the south american plate.

Focus/Epicenter

Magnitude

The epicenter was in Valdivai, Chile

The focus was 60 meters below the epicenter

The magnitude of this earthquake was 9.5 that included four foreshocks that reached above a magnitude of 7.0 which happened the day before the surface wave (main earthquake) hit.

Death Toll

Economic Loss

The death toll of the quake in Chile reached 1,655 killed with 3,000 injured and 2,000,000 homeless. The Tsunami that caused 61 deaths in Hawaii, and 138 in Japan, with 32 missing or possibly dead in the Philippines.

The quake accumulated a large cost of $550 million dollars southern Chile, and the tsunami $75 million dollars worth of damage in Hawaii, $50 million in Japan, and $500,000 damage to the west coast of the united states.
