Median and Range

Quick Review

What are two examples of

measures of central tendency?

There are 11 grade 7 students in Ms. P's math class.

To find the median mark on the last math test, she listed their marks from greatest to least:

95,92,87,85,80,78,76,73,70,66,54

What is the median mark? (Middle number)

A new student enters Ms. P's class. She writes the test and receives a mark of 72.

To find the new median, the teacher includes her mark in the ordered list:

95,92,87,85,80,78,76,73,72,70,66,54

What is the new median?

(Note: When there are 2 middle numbers, the mean of the 2 will be the median.)

How would you find the median for a set of

numbers that are not in order?

Find the median for the following:

  • 9, 6, 8
  • 70, 89, 54, 47, 99
  • 88, 42, 88, 70, 54, 63, 44, 88

When data is arranged in order, we can easily find the range.

95,92,87,85,80,78,76,73,72,70,66,54

The range of a data set tells how spread out the data is. It is the difference between the greatest and least numbers.

95-54 = 41

The range of marks is 41

Find the range for the following:

a) 2, 6, 10

b) 20, 50, 48, 98

c) 40, 30, 20, 100, 80, 10

Write 5 numbers, so that:

a) The mode is 10. The mean and median are equal.

b) The mode is 10. The mean is less than the median.

Another measure of central tendency is the median.

The MEDIAN of a data set is the middle number when the data are arranged in order.
